Green Mama Is Going Country!

Working in the GardenWorking in the Garden (Photo credit: Chiot's Run)Well friends, it looks like our days of urban farming in a rental house are coming to an end. No, wait, this is a good thing - we're in the process of buying a house! A house on an acre of land just outside city limits, where the Green Mama and her family can garden in a much bigger way than we have been.

We call the house Rainbow's Acre, a name inspired by our six-year old daughter whose favorite color is rainbow. She is a rainbow! I'll post some pictures of the rainbow girl so you can see what I mean.

We think the name fits well because we plan to squeeze as much diversity out of our acre as we can - no monoculture here, we plan to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs and nuts in every hue.  Oh yes, and chickens too. With bread baked in an adobe oven.

I'm excited and happy to share our plans with you as  they unfold. We close on the house in two weeks, after which you can expect to see us going to work. It's spring in South Dakota, the perfect time to start making our growing dreams a reality.

Now that spring is here, what are your gardening plans? I'd love to hear about them!

  1. congrats on the new home! I hope you don't end up having to spend much of your day in the car to pay for it. I look forward to hearing about what you grow, what works, and what doesn't!

ps you have word verification, makes it tough to get the post to work.

  2. thanks Mimi! We lucked out and the house is only 6 minutes from the kids' schools (and mine). Husband's commute will actually be a little bit shorter, so that's good. I look forward to hearing more from you too, your watercolors are gorgeous!

ps I will try to remove the word verification, I like the linky app that you're using.

I am very pleased and happy for you and your family. Rainbow garden sounds perfect! I am very pleased that I finally found your blog. I have little excuse for that except it has only been recently my daughter put a refurbished cpu on so that I may flitter here & twitter there much better than in the past.

My daughter is correct though, she wants me to maintain my connectedness with outside, nature, flowers and not just computer all day. She is a very wise woman ~ she knew planting flowers is an exceptionally good enducement OUTSIDE.

I am positive when I speak to my daughter about you, she will think you an excellent influence to me. I'm @grammakaye on twitter ~ I send you and yours blessings, continued blessings and positive thoughts for all good things.

  7. My girls and I planted a small container veggie garden this past month and already I'm getting such adorable little green sprouts!

Congratulations on the house. While we are renting, we are hoping to buy this place someday and turn it into a full-fledged backyard homestead!

I'm looking forward to your April posts!
